Dietary Advice for Kids Constipation
A child is said to be constipated, when the number of bowel movements per week is less than three. When the child experiences difficulty in passing stools and passes hard, large and dry stools, it is supposed to be constipated. If constipation exists for more than 2 weeks, the child is supposed to suffer from chronic constipation. Lack of water, fruit juices and milk is the main culprit.
Changing the child from breast milk to formula feed also causes constipation. Any kind of sickness or medications results in constipation. Increase the fluids in the diet. Add prune juice to cereals or gravies. Give them more of cereal bran, fruits and vegetables. A well balanced diet with whole grains, pulses, legumes, fruits and vegetables are effective in solving the problem. Establishing regular bowel timing is helpful in curbing constipation. Going to potty should be made a pleasure experience. Read a story book by sitting near the child. Read a story book of their choice.
Laxatives available commercially prove beneficial. But the age of the child and severity of the complication is essentially known. Take the help of your paediatrician, before opting for a laxative. Rewarding a child for toileting is helpful. Avoid keeping foods as rewards.
