When cirrhosis worsens, it progresses to liver failure and a cirrhotic person can develop hepatic encephalopathy. (also called as hepatic coma)
In Cirrhosis of the liver, there is progressive degeneration of the liver cells which is irreversible. In simple words, the liver cells die and lose their functions. There is scarring of liver tissue (also called fibrosis). When it worsens it can progress into liver failure and hepatic coma.
