Can pregnancy diet help being pregnant? What foods can be considered as healthy pregnancy diet?

We know the importance of a well balanced diet and what advantages it holds to keep us healthy and active. During pregnancy a balanced diet becomes even more important as the mother has to take care of her nutrition as well as for the unborn child.   

The first trimester is particularly important as this is the first stage of the pregnancy and the first stage of the baby’s mental and physical growth. It’s important to eat a nutritious diet for a healthy pregnancy. This means a diet, which comprises of a proper balance of various nutrients. A healthy pregnancy diet comprises of proteins, fats, carbohydrates in the right proportion.


Also one needs to take the right amount of minerals and vitamins, which are essential for a healthy baby. Other essential nutrients include:

Folic Acid – A very essential nutrient and a must for every pregnant woman. This nutrient, which is primarily a B vitamin, prevents neural tube disorders. It also promotes better growth of the spine and the brain of the unborn child. This vitamin can be found particularly in leafy vegetables and citrus fruits. At least consume 4 mg of folic acid everyday for a healthy pregnancy.

Calcium – It is one of the most vital components for the growth of your baby’s bones and skeletal system. It is also important for the development of the teeth. The best solution is to eat lots of daily products, which include cheese, milk and yoghurt. Certain vegetables are also high in calcium so make sure you balance your diet with adequate supply of calcium.

Iron – Iron helps in fostering haemoglobin levels for the mother and child. It’s also an essential element for the development of bones and teeth. There are many iron rich foods namely potatoes, spinach, broccoli and whole grain foods.

Fiber – Due to the increase in diet, it is also important to up your fiber intake to avoid digestive problems such as constipation. Therefore eat lots of fruits, peas, nuts, cereals and pulses. These are excellent sources of fiber.

Water - This is an essential element for any pregnancy diet. Water helps in streaming essential nutrients to various parts of the body and especially to the foetus region where the baby development is taking place. Water also helps in regulating hormones and blood pressure which can very during pregnancy. Therefore taking all these foods during pregnancy can really promote a healthy childbirth.
