children Diet

Children in the age group of 1 to 5 years are fussy eaters. Convincing them and providing a balanced diet is of great concern. Children, who are already 5 years require about 1400 to 1500 calories. A little less (1300 kcals) is recommended for 1-5 years. Always remember to keep certain points in mind, prior to diet formulation:

  • Variation in the diet is vital
  • Pay importance to the colour and taste of the food.

  • Making foods in different shapes and sizes are pleasing and help them to venture into them

Early nutrition is important, as it is difficult to convince them in the later years. Consider the likes and dislikes of the child, especially after 3 years. They are clear in expressing their choices by 3 years and avoid all the foods they dislike. Positive reinforcement for certain important foods that are disliked is important. The serving size for children is lesser than those of adults. About 2-3 servings of animal foods are advised. Fats and sugar are limited, especially Trans fats. Vegetables and fruits are served at 3-5 and 2-4 servings respectively.
