Celiac Disease Advice

disease or celiac sprue is an autoimmune disorder. It is also referred to as gluten-sensitive enteropathy and damages the lining of the small intestine, in response to gluten. Gluten is a cereal protein. Sensitivity to gluten results in improper absorption of certain nutrients, such as folic acid, iron, calcium and fat.

When the body produces antibodies on the entry of gluten, it is mistaken for a foreign invader. This affects the lining of the intestine and results in inflammation. The vili, which helps in the absorption of nutrients, are damaged. This results in malnourishment and malabsorption of certain nutrients. Heredity does affect. Surgery, pregnancy and viral infections also trigger celiac sprue. It is a genetically predisposed disease, which can be treated. Typical symptoms are weight loss, growth problems, fatigue and anemia. Try to keep a check on your children and visit your physician for further guidance.

Gluten is seen in wheat, barley and rye. Transglutaminase in the tissues react with gliadin, the gluten protein, resulting in infection. Carbohydrate malabsorption results in fatigue and weight loss. Individuals with celiac disease are greater risk for lymphoma and adenocarcinoma.
