Adkins Diet Food

I am very interested in knowing about the Atkins diet and it is extremely popular. But some people have advised against it and so I would like to know more about this diet. Can you please guide me in understanding this diet better.

The Atkins diet plan is an eating regimen that encourages weight loss in a natural manner. It aims to achieve this purpose by inducing changes in dietary habits and body metabolism. The Atkins diet strictly limits the intake of carbohydrates in the daily meal plan. Once food cravings are diminished, an individual is likely to feel energized and rejuvenated on a physical and mental level.

The Atkins diet consists of four separate phases according to when they occur. The induction is the first step and it is the introduction to the Atkins diet.

This phase is followed by the ongoing weight loss and pre-maintenance phases and the last phase of this diet is the and lifetime maintenance phase. These different phases of the Atkins diet plan are aimed at various aspects of the diet. Each phase consists of certain steps that assist an individual in fulfilling his goals. In the induction phase, an attempt is made to jump start the process of fat burning. This is done by completely eliminating carbohydrates from the diet. As a result the body is forced to utilize fat to produce energy. The phase lasts for fourteen days and results are expected to be seen within these two weeks. The ongoing weight loss or OWL phase allows the individual to consume only those carbohydrates which are rich in nutrients. The purpose of this is to encourage continued burning of fat, while also keeping the carbohydrate balance low in order to promote weight loss. The pre-maintenance phase is designed to help the individual establish lifelong dietary habits. In this phase, 10 gram increases of carbohydrates are allowed in the Atkins diet menu, provided that weight loss is still occurring. Once an individual reaches the lifetime maintenance phase, he is expected to have attained a perfect balance and is able to make the correct dietary choices which will help him to maintain healthy weight.

There are some advantages as well as disadvantages to the Atkins diet. The diet is well-known and followed by many individuals across the globe. It also promotes quick loss of weight. Another feature of this plan that appeals to many people is that Atkins diet foods can consist of an unlimited quantity of fatty and protein rich foods.  It is also not time consuming and costly as compared to other popular eating plans. But there is a downside to this diet as well. It is not suitable for everybody and many individuals, especially women, tend to experience dizziness due to lack of carbohydrates in the diet. Many important nutrients are also excluded from the diet. Some people even complain of problems in kidney and liver functioning. Therefore it is advisable to consult a doctor before adopting any diet or eating plan.

The Atkins diet is a highly controversial diet and has gained a lot of popularity because of the kinds of foods it allows in its diet. It has an equal number of success stories as well as results gone awry and hence a number of dieticians and nutritionists are careful in recommending this particular diet. According to this diet, people who consumed too many carbohydrates are bound to put on excess weight and hence getting rid of carbohydrates is necessary in shedding fat.
The Atkins diet promotes the consumption of protein in addition to also eating fatty foods. There are many cons to this diet as opposed to the advantages it offers. The Atkins diet recommends high quantities of meat, eggs, cheese while staying away from refined sugar, milk, rice or any type of white flour. The Atkins diet has been seriously criticized because of the lack of fruits and the vegetables in the first two weeks of the diet.  Fruits, vegetables and whole grain foods can be gradually introduced into the diet after the first two weeks. Carbohydrates must be gradually introduced and maintained to a restricted amount during the entire duration of the Atkins diet.

When carbohydrates are reduced drastically or much less than the individual would currently consume, the body starts to burn down its own fat for fuel. This state is known as ketosis, wherein the dieter starts getting energy from ketones or carbon fragments that contained fats for the purpose of fuel. Moreover, the individual starts to get less hungry and hence consumes lesser portions and amounts than before. But this state of ketosis can bring in a number of side-effects such as unpleasant breath odor and constipation. This state of ketosis turns the body into a fat burning engine as fat cells become the primary energy source for burning fuel thus leading to loss of weight.
