Diabetes Diet Tips

Certain basic guidelines help in combating the situation of high blood glucose in an easier manner. A healthy and balanced diet with regular exercise and lifestyle modifications helps in managing the situation in a better manner. Certain diabetes diet tips are listed below:

  • Timely eating with medications or insulin injection is helpful. Avoid skipping meals, especially breakfast, as the interval becomes too long.
  • About 1,200 to 1,600 calories are recommended.

This is based on the body weight of the diabetic.
  • A low fat and moderate protein diet is helpful. This is due to increased probability of kidney and heart disorders.
  • Staying healthy is easily achieved by regular exercise. A warm up for 5 minutes, prior to workouts is helpful. Opting for the stairs is effective than taking the elevator. Walk down to your nearest store, instead of using a vehicle.
  • Choosing the right foods plays a vital role in decreasing the blood glucose levels.
  • Lifestyle modifications include abstinence from alcohol and smoking.
  • Alcoholic beverages, especially in an empty stomach results in low blood sugar or hypoglycaemia. They also contribute to 'empty calories'. They fail to provide any essential nutrients.
  • Nuts are energy dense and avoided. Desserts are rich in fat and calories. Low fat desserts, such as fruit salads are preferred.
  • Saturated and Trans fats are not preferred, such as margarine, butter, clarified butter and partially hydrogenated fats like vanaspathi. Fried and processed foods are not included.
  • Mono and poly unsaturated fats are helpful. Fish provides omega 3 fatty acids.
  • Non stick cookwares are helpful in decreasing the oil used for cooking. Oil sprays help in using restricted amounts.
  • Lean meat is helpful than red meat. Egg whites are effective. Avoid egg yolk, in case of high cholesterol levels. Poultry devoid of skin is also recommended.
