Diabetes Diet System

Diet planning in diabetes helps in curbing the blood glucose levels. Control of portion size and counting the calories is helpful in a diabetes menu plan. There are four systems of meal planning for diabetes. The advantages of a diabetes diet system are that it ensures variety in the diet, thereby breaking the monotony. It also helps in keeping the sugar levels at the normal. It also prevents further increase in the blood sugar levels. A change in the lifestyle helps this situation.

The Food pyramid is of great help. The cereals form the base. Whole grains are preferred. About six or more serving of cereals and whole grains are recommended. Two to three servings of milk and milk products are preferred. Three to five servings of raw vegetables prove helpful in providing the various antioxidants and phytonutrients. Two to four servings of fruits is helpful. Animal foods are recommended at two to three servings per day. The Plate system is yet another system of diet for diabetics. Divide the plate into two halves. The first half is filled with vegetables such as broccoli, egg plant, spinach, lettuce, cauliflower, asparagus and tomatoes. These are non starchy vegetables.

One quarter is filled with any protein, such as tofu, egg or meat. The other quarter is starchy vegetables or cereals and grains. A glass of skimmed milk is taken along with this. The Food exchange is yet another diabetes diet system that aids in making the right choice of foods. Carbohydrates, protein and fats are controlled in the diet by exchange lists. The exchange options in each category of nutrients are available with the quantity. Certain foods are exchanged for an array of foods. Carbohydrate counting is the last technique of diabetes diet system. This helps a great deal in curbing the intake and regulates weight loss.
