Diabetes diet guide helps with information related to diabetes. A healthy diet with regular exercise and lifestyle changes helps in maintenance of blood glucose levels. Eating a balanced diet at the right time on a daily basis is important for recovery. Diabetes mellitus is a metabolic disorder that is accompanied with high blood glucose levels. Changes and proper management helps in curbing the same.


Carbohydrate counting is vital in diabetic control. Avoid second servings. Restrict the calorie intake, thereby helping in maintenance of body weight.

About 1200 to 1600 calories are recommended, based on the body weight of the individual. In case of obese subjects, the caloric intake is round 1200 calories. Protein contributes to 20 per cent of the daily calories. Animal sources of protein include egg, fish, lean meat and poultry. Skin is removed from chicken and turkey, prior to consumption. This reduces the overall quantity of invisible fat. Tofu, cottage cheese, legumes and pulses are the vegetable sources. Fat contributes to less than thirty per cent of the total calories. Solid fats or saturated fats are completely avoided. Refined oils are preferred. Two or more oils are combined to facilitate the availability of the deficient essential fatty acids mutually available. Groundnut oil, sunflower oil, safflower oil, flax seed oil and olive oil are included.

Fruits and raw vegetables are helpful in providing dietary fibre. Junk foods and fried foods are avoided. Carbonated beverages are not preferred, as they prove useless in providing nutrients. Smoking cigarettes is harmful, due to the presence of nicotine, which is a vasoconstrictor. Regular exercise for twenty to thirty minutes proves beneficial in controlling the blood glucose levels. Walking, cycling and jogging are the most easily performed exercises. No special equipments are required for these exercises.
