(October 12, 2010)

What is whey protein?
Several people, especially men, work out at the gym regularly, undergoing weight training, in order to increase their muscle mass. For people who want to build their muscles, eating substantial meals are very important, as vitamins, minerals, protein and several other nutrients are required for the growth, maintenance and repair of muscle tissues. In order to make up for the lack of any nutrients, it is common for body builders to take protein supplements, on a regular basis, since protein is like the main building block for muscles. The most common body building supplements are creatine, glutamine and whey protein, to name a few. Whey protein is probably one of the most commonly used supplements as compared to the others, due to the fact that the human body tends to absorb whey protein faster than the other supplements.

Whey protein side effects and benefits
Whey protein is derived from milk, which makes it one of the most superior forms of protein supplements available. Apart from expediting muscle tissue repair and growth, whey protein supplements contain anti-inflammatory as well as anti cancer properties. Several varieties of whey protein supplements can also be used to lose weight, when they are taken in place of regular meals. With all the various benefits of whey protein that are known about, people wonder if there could be any whey protein side effects too. As compared to other protein supplements, whey protein side effects are very few. However, an excessive consumption of anything can be dangerous. It is best to consult a qualified fitness instructor on what kind of supplement to use, in what quantities as well as when and how to take whey protein.

How to use whey protein?
Since there are several varieties of whey protein powder that are available, you need to be careful while selecting one. Some powders can help enhance your workout regime, since they are very high in nitric oxide, creatine and caffeine. Other supplements can be used as meal supplements, because they contain vitamins, minerals and iron. Whey protein powders need to be mixed in liquid before they can be consumed. You can also choose the liquid to mix the powder in, based on your requirement. If you want to gain weight, then you need to mix the powder in whole milk. However, if the objective is building lean muscle, then the powder should be mixed in water, soymilk or skim milk. While mixing the powder in liquid, it is best to use a blender, to avoid the formation of lumps. The whey protein shake should then be sipped very slowly, to avoid getting sick.

When to take whey protein?
Based on your requirements, you need to identify the right time, for consumption of the supplement. The times at which you could drink the supplement are:
• In place of breakfast, in the morning
• About one hour before working out, in order to build muscles
• Right after you complete your work out session, as an added boost
• Before bedtime, in order to gain weight

As Protein is the most important component of a diet, protein powder is also having same importance. Many dieticians suggest the protein powder weight loss program as it has proved to be beneficial when trying to lose weight. The two popular types of best protein powder for weight loss used today are whey protein powder and soy protein powder.

Whey Protein Preparation Tips

Yes definitely the whey products available in the market are fat too costly. It would be great if you can prepare whey protein or include food sources rich in whey protein at home level. Amino acids are the building blocks of proteins and proteins are made up of two types of amino acids – essential amino acids and non-essential amino acids. Whey proteins are very high quality complete proteins present in milk. Milk contains 27% proteins out of which 80% is casein and 20% is whey proteins. While preparation of cottage cheese or cheese the water which is separated from the milk (from the curd) contains all the whey proteins. This water is then purified to various concentrations to derive whey protein. This is the reason why they are so expensive, as lot of effort is required to derive whey protein. Naturally you can include whey protein in your diet by including milk and milk products like yoghurt, yoghurt and buttermilk. The water is separated out while preparing cottage cheese should never be discarded as it has the highest amount of whey proteins. Utilize that water by adding it in vegetable gravy, soup or simply use it as a substitute to water which is used to make bread dough. You can even add a small teaspoon of sugar and drink that healthy glass of protein. It would become difficult to prepare whey protein powder at home as the machineries required for purification and dehydration are not available.
