Importance of Protein Diet
Protein diet is picked up a lot of importance owing to the blood glucose swings, associated with high carbohydrate diets. Minimizing the carbohydrate intake and opting for high protein diet is in vogue. Protein is important for muscle repair. Calcium is held or bound by proteins. Essential amino acids in proteins are very important, as they perform various functions.

Care is necessary, as increased intake of any major nutrient results in its conversion to fat. This results in its accumulation, thereby leading to obesity.

A high protein diet results in more weight loss in a faster manner. This is owed to the loss of water from the system. Certain amount of water is stored by a regular supply of carbohydrate. This water is necessary in various metabolic reactions. Reduced intake of carbohydrate, results in decreased amount of water in the system. Increased intake of protein, in the form of meat, poultry and cheese, results in increased intake of invisible fat and cholesterol. Reduced carbohydrate also results in certain renal problems. Associated weakness is also seen to occur.
High protein diets provide 30 to 40 per cent of the daily calories and also increase the risk of gouty arthritis. The burden on the kidneys is also increased, thereby increasing the risk of renal failure. The requirement for protein in adults depends on their age and activity pattern. Two to three servings of protein are recommended for adults. Lean meats are preferred to red meat, which is marbled with layers of fat. Poultry in the form of chicken or turkey is consumed without the skin. This ensures low cholesterol and low fat levels. Some of the high protein foods in diet are whey, soya beans, chicken, nuts, turkey and so on. Protein diets are considered to trigger antioxidant levels. Infection and illnesses are easily averted by protein diet foods.
