Gestational Diabetes Diet Guidelines

My age is 26, I am pregnant; can anybody tell me how will gestational diabetes diet guidelines help? Is it advisable for me?

Healthy Diet for Gestational Diabetes during Pregnancy
A high blood glucose level, during pregnancy is referred to as Gestational diabetes. The mother is relieved of the condition after pregnancy. The risk of the mother becoming a diabetic in later life is high. Gestational diabetes diet plan comprises of moderate carbohydrate, low fat and high fibre intake. Carbohydrate counting is important for a healthy diet. About 12 to 15 grams of carbohydrate is seen in one serving of food. Trading of foods can be done within the same food group, with the help of Food Exchange. It helps to break the monotony of the diet. Vegetables provide less carbohydrate. It is as less as 5 grams and is considered, only on more than 2 servings in every meal. About 300 extra calories is recommended for a pregnant mother.

A snack at bedtime is helpful in preventing low blood glucose levels in the night. Beverages and foods with added honey, sugar, molasses, jams, jellies, maple syrup and corn syrup are completely abstained from. Reading the labels is vital in choosing the right foods. High fibre foods, such as whole grains, cereals, vegetables, fruits, pulses and legumes is of great help in lowering the blood glucose levels and also relieves pregnant mothers of constipation. Regular exercise is effective in keeping the weight under control.

Uncontrolled weight gain is possible and results in complications. A balanced diet with foods from all the food groups helps in controlling the blood glucose levels. Foods that are deep fried are not included. Foods that are cooked by microwave, grilling, pressure cooking. High fat foods are not preferred. Saturated and Trans fats are avoided. Clarified butter, margarine and butter are few of them.  Junk foods, such as potato chips, French fries, pizzas, burgers and so on are avoided. Poly and monounsaturated fats are preferred. Skimmed milk and related fat free products are consumed.
