Free Diabetes Diet

When the person is diagnosed for diabetes it is very essential to count the quantity of carbohydrates as it is the carbohydrates that will break down in the body to form glucose. For planning a diet for diabetics it is essential to count the calories for the diet. Higher the calories, greater the risk of developing diabetes. Thus it is suggested to have foods that are low in calories. Carbohydrates are counted in terms of grams or exchanges.

One gram of carbohydrates is equal to 4 calories. One exchange of carbohydrates is equal to 15 grams. However there are certain foods that can provide less than 20 calories or 5 grams or less per serving. These foods can be eaten without counting. These are free foods or drink that can be spread out throughout the day and need not be eaten in one sitting.

Some of the free foods available are:

Broth, carbonated or mineral water, sugar free candy, tea or coffee, sugar free drink mixes, sugar soft drinks, jams and jellies that are light and low sugar.
However, the labels of these foods need to be checked for the ingredients and the quantity in which it is added. These foods can be added with our everyday diet and thus helps in lowering the calories.
