Diet for People with Diabetes 

Diet plays an important role in diabetes. It is necessary to understand what kind and type of food is being consumed .Apart from carbohydrates that gates broken down to form glucose, protein and fat are also broken down to glucose. It is not necessary to have a bland diet. The taste of the food can be enhanced by addition of proper seasonings and tastemakers.

Some of the important factors to be considered are:

  • Fiber should be at least 30 Gms per day. Have simple foods that are easily digested than heavy foods.


    Bakery products and processed foods need to be avoided.
  • Fruits and vegetables should be consumed 5 exchanges/day.
  • Consumption of walnuts and almonds are beneficial as it is rich in monounsaturated fats.
  • Leafy vegetables and all types of beans are recommended as it can reduce bad or LDL cholesterol.
  • Fat free milk and yoghurt and egg white can be taken.
  • Addition of wheat bran to wheat flour and flax seeds to the flour can improve the quality of the diet.
  • Consume certain foods like onion, garlic,cinnamon and bitter gourd as it can reduce the blood glucose levels.

Planning a diet for diabetics can help the individual to understand how many foods needs to be consumed, at how much interval of time and what type of foods are consumed.
