Eating healthy diet is an essential role in diabetes. There is no special diabetes diet. The person suffering from diabetes can have the same diet which the other family members are taking. However careful monitoring of carbohydrates is essential as it can affect the blood sugar levels. Healthy food choices, exercise and medications are the integral part in diabetes.

Certain guidelines that need to be considered to ensure a healthy diet are:

  • Select foods that low glycolic index.Glycemic index is the measure of influence of certain foods on blood glucose levels.


    Foods with low glycemic index may have low lipid levels. Low glycolic foods are whole grains, fruits and vegetables as compared to high glycemic index foods like rice, pastas, cereals and baked goods.  
  • Eat the right amount of calories so that the ideal weight is maintained. Eat according to the serving size given. Do not over eat. Bring variety in foods in terms of color, flavor and taste.
  • Eat the meals and snacks at proper and regular time everyday .Do not skip a meal.
  • Read the food labels to know the amount of sugar present in the food.
  • Monitor the calorie regularly. Avoid foods that are highly caloric.

Thus while planning the diet for diabetics it is necessary that the diet is healthy, palatable and acceptable by the individual.
