Healthy Nutrition Tips For Healthy Teeth
April 25, 2011
Oral hygiene should be an important part of your daily routine. It is always good to brush your teeth twice a day and to wash your mouth regularly to wash away harmful bacteria and food particles that get stuck in your teeth. However, even with the most careful oral care, your teeth may be at risk from cavities and decay because of what you consume. Certain types of food and drink in our diet could be harmful as they accelerate the process of tooth decay. It is therefore important to choose your diet well.
Here are some tips to eat healthy and beat tooth decay.
The first thing you should do for your teeth is to avoid consuming some types of food and drink. You should avoid excessively sweet drinks and colas and avoid drinks that contain coloring agents in them. Drinks with artificial flavors are also not recommended.
Avoid eating too many sweets. Candies and chocolates should be had in moderation and you should always wash your mouth after consuming them.
Plaque formation on the teeth causes cavities and dental problems.
You need to avoid eating excessively sugary or starchy foods. Bacteria love starch and sugar as they thrive on such foods. If you are not washing your mouth regularly, try to avoid eating sugary or starchy food.
For children, oral hygiene is particularly important as the effects of poor hygiene will cause tooth problems for them throughout their lives. Some foods are recommended as they help to keep the teeth clean. Fruits are always recommended, particularly apples and grapes. Vegetables such as cauliflower and
carrots
are good for your teeth. Studies have also pointed to the positive effect of cheese. Do not try creamy cheeses as these will stick in the teeth. Moderately hard cheese is good as it does not stick in the teeth.
You should strictly avoid sweet food that tends to be sticky. Toffees and energy bars can get stuck in the teeth when you eat them and until you brush your teeth, the sugar deposits will not be cleaned as your saliva will not remove this food. Using tobacco products or smoking will cause considerable tooth decay as they contain harmful chemicals that damage the outer layer of the teeth. Tea and coffee also have a bad effect on teeth as they tend to stain or damage the surface of the teeth. Always avoid hard foods and do not chew on anything that could crack your teeth.
