Ripe, golden and luscious, oranges are packed with vitamin C and all sorts of nutrients that are great for your health. Delicious, and sweet and sour, oranges are great citrus fruits that almost everybody enjoys. Oranges might have been first cultivated in South East Asia around 4000 BC. Travellers took the fruit to Africa, and then the fruit made its way to Rome. The Arabs got introduced to this tart and tangy fruit somewhere in the 10th century A.D.


It is believed that Christopher Columbus introduced oranges in America by bringing the first seeds.

Oranges are great fruits for almost everybody, and are known to treat health problems. Orange fruit are a power house of vitamin C. These fruits are also a great source of aldehyde, beta-carotene, citrus acid, potassium, phosphorous, calcium and compounds of alcohol ENE group.


Narigenin and Hesperetin are the important flavonoids in oranges. Narigenin has anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties. It is an immune system modulator.


These antioxidants are known to neutralize the harmful effects of unstable oxygen molecules and free radicals. This slows down the aging process and also makes your skin look younger.

Oranges can increase the immunity of the body and help you combat infections.


This fruit is rich in Vitamin A. It also has flavonoids and antioxidants such as alpha and beta carotene, lutein, zea-xanhin, and beta-cryptoxanthin. Oranges are a great source of fibre. These globules of good health so not have cholesterol, sodium and fat, and so, great for just about anybody. Oranges also have copper, magnesium, vitamin B6, niacin, and thiamine. Oranges are acidic and this means that they can help detoxify your body.

Oranges also have pectin, which is a kind of bulk laxative. It is generally good for those who want to loose weight. Pectin can also be good for safeguarding the mucous membrane of the colon because it decreases its exposure to toxic substances. Pectin can bind itself around cancer-causing chemicals in the intestine and this reduces the chances of cancer. Pectin can also reduce the level of cholesterol in the blood and it can reduce the process of re-absorption in the intestine by sticking to bile acids.

Thus, oranges are golden globules of health. Eat some as a snack, or drink a glass of fresh orange juice. Turn a few quarters of an orange into a dessert or toss some in a salad. Oranges are delicious and healthy!
