Foods to Eat to Stay Healthy

Submitted by Nick on March 18, 2011

When you give your body the right kind of nutrition, the health benefits are simply amazing. By eating healthy you will stay healthy and you will notice yourself falling ill less regularly. A healthy diet contains several vital components.

  • Protein: Proteins help build body mass and are a vital nutrient. You can supply your body with proteins from lean meats and fish. Meat based diets also help you provide iron to your body.

Vegetarian choices for protein rich food include lentils, beans and potatoes. There are a wide variety of foods with protein content in them.
  • Carbohydrates: Carbohydrates are another vital nutritional component. They give us energy and are necessary in everyday life.

Carbohydrates can be found mainly in grains. Cereals, breads, bagels, pasta etc are all good sources of carbohydrates. You should not have a carbohydrate heavy diet.

Fruits are also a good source of carbohydrates. Apples, pineapples, strawberries, pears and bananas are examples of fruits with high carbohydrate content.
  • Vitamins and Minerals: Fruits also benefit you by supplying vital vitamins and minerals. By adding plenty of vegetables to your diet, you will be supplying your body with the right vitamins and minerals.

For example, Vitamin B6 helps with absorption of protein. These vital functions are helped by a diet that is rich in fruits and vegetables.
  • Roughage: Dietary fiber is essential for a healthy digestive system. Roughage helps the food move smoothly through the system which in turn aids in the absorption of nutrients from the food. Roughage can be found in some cereals like bran, fruits like the peel of an apple and in leafy vegetables.
  • Fat: Fat is required for humans. Unsaturated fats should be encouraged over saturated fats. You can consume some foods that may be slightly fatty or consume 2% or 3% milk. A moderate amount of fat keeps the body healthy.
  • Hydration: Hydration is one of the most ignored parts of the diet. It is recommended that a person drinks at least 8 glasses of water daily to hydrate the body. Hydration helps with regulating body fluids, cooling the body and improving digestion. Hydration also helps with urination which is used to expel toxins from the body. Drinking water regularly means urinating regularly which is a healthy process.

Finally, you should look at foods and meals that can be avoided. Having a snack in the middle of the day is not really beneficial to you as it usually contains some junk food which is avoidable. Fried foods and heavy fat foods should be avoided completely.
