Diet for kids
Most parents complain that setting a healthy diet for kids, especially those who are fussy eaters, can be a huge challenge. However, it is very important for parents to realize that children get tired of the same taste very quickly and therefore, in order to keep the child interested in eating, parents need to provide a diet for kids that contains a lot of variety. Hence, healthy diet plans for kids should contain around 5 to 6 meals a day, with a wide variety of fruits, vegetables, meat, dairy products, nuts, seeds, cereals, beans and legumes and oil. Unfortunately, it is seen that many children show a preference for junk foods or instant foods that lack nutrition and are high in fat and calories. Such foods usually include burgers, pizzas, French fries, nuggets, chips, cookies, instant noodles and pasta, to name a few. However, several health and nutrition experts can recommend simple diet menu tips for children, where parents are required to modify the recipes of some of their children’s favorite foods.
Hence, several innovative parents have learned to prepare foods like: • Homemade hamburgers, with grilled lean meat, on whole wheat bread, with low fat mayo and extra vegetables. Parents who are following a vegetarian diet for kids can make burgers using vegetables or soy meat. • Pizza, on whole wheat bread, with fresh homemade tomato sauce, topped with pepper, mushrooms, corn, olives and cottage cheese or goat cheese • French fries that have been baked in the oven These foods can also be included in a healthy diet for kids with weight loss problems.
Sweets and foods or beverages that contain sugar should be given to children in limited quantities. This is because of two reasons; first, sugar can have an adverse effect on their teeth and can lead to weight gain. The second reason is that eating even a small quantity of sugar can increase the craving for more.
While parents try to limit the intake of sugar in the diet for kids with diabetes, care should be taken to ensure that children eat sweets only on rare occasions. Before setting any diet tips for kids, it is absolutely essential for all parents to consult a doctor or a nutritionist. This is all the more important for children who are prone to certain health conditions and therefore, parents need to consult a pediatrician, before planning diet for kids with constipation, diarrhea, high cholesterol or other such conditions.
