Lighter Foods for Supper

Submitted by Serena Mason on August 3, 2010

Supper or the last meal of the day is supposed to be light. The word supper originated from the French word souper. However, people in England use this term to refer to some simple family gatherings. The meaning of the word supper differs from country to country and place to place.

There are some groups who form supper clubs and meet at each others’ house for supper. This is a good way of gathering or reunion.

The food for supper includes soups, pizzas, salads, or simple pastas that are light on your stomach and easy to digest as well. Supper is generally served between 6 pm and 8 pm. The only requirement is that a supper needs to be taken after a lunch.

In some part of the countries, the supper is a meal that is taken after lunch and before dinner, some light snacks along with your evening tea.

Generally, people serve bread with some cold cut meats, cheese, soup, and different varieties of salad, boiled or fried potatoes depending on the demand, eggs dishes, or dairy products. Supper has a very casual set up and people who come for this gathering are also casually dressed.

In several countries, people serve ham, pickles, tomatoes, different juices, sliced vegetables, sausages, and varieties of bread for supper.

People may offer wine or any other drink to accompany the food.  In Poland, on the eve of Christmas, people prepare almost twelve different types of dishes for supper.

While in some part of the world, people serve elaborate foods for supper, there are parts of the United Kingdom where people serve biscuits and a warm milky drink for supper. Well, talking about supper clubs, you can also start one of your own. You need to let people know about your club.

You can easily do this by seeking the help of the Internet, spreading the news by word of mouth, or by asking your friends if they are interested. In this club, you can select any theme for the supper gathering. You can try new things for each gathering. You can cook supper for a cause and make people smile. The purpose of having such a club is that it helps you know people and creates a relaxing atmosphere.

You can communicate with like-minded people and exchange different ideas. The best part of a supper club is that other people will support you with cooking. This also brings about new ideas of supper. No matter what you serve make sure you keep the tradition live.
