Foods to Avoid Obesity and Weight Gain
Submitted by Elizabeth on July 19, 2010
Obesity
is increasingly becoming one of the most serious health concerns. Obesity contributes to chronic diseases and increases the risk of
diabetes
, heart disease,
cancer
and stroke. A disturbing trend abut obesity is that today children too are becoming victims. The key to combating obesity is to lower the consumption of bad food and increase the amount of exercise. Due to the easy availability of
fast food
and the sedentary lifestyles of today, obesity is becoming more and more difficult to manage.
Dealing with this problem requires a conscious effort to make good health a priority in our lives.
Meats form the main
source of protein
for most people.
Weight gain
can be prevented by avoiding the consumption of meats that are too fatty.
Refrain from eating meats that have more than 8 gm of fat and an excess of 100 calories per serving. Rule out turkey bacon and pork from the diet. Also restrict intake of fried meats.
Sugary foods cause an elevation of blood sugar levels, which stimulate the production of insulin. Insulin eliminates sugar from the blood, which then becomes stored in the form of fats. Avoid sweets such as chocolates, cakes and cookies.
Sodas are high in sugar and hence are as harmful as other sweet treats. In addition to weight gain, they also contribute to dental decay and heart problems. Diet sodas make use of sugar substitutes which are known to carry some health risks of their own. Hence it is best to avoid all types of sodas. Fries are a popular junk food that has an adverse effect on health. Fries are deep fried in unhealthy oils and are also starchy. This is an extremely unhealthy combination and hence French fries must be eliminated from the diet to prevent obesity.
In addition to
eating healthy foods
, maintaining healthy eating practices also helps in preventing weight gain. Consume smaller portions and do not go in for seconds. Avoid eating from buffets as it is very easy to lose track how much and which foods you are eating. It is even possible to consume an entire day’s calories in just one meal at a buffet. When eating out, opt for sharing your meals or pack up half of your meal and carry it home. Buy fresh fruits and vegetables and avoid refined and processed foods. Avoid snacking on chips and cookies, and fill up on carrot sticks and fruit slices instead.
