How to Lay Off Junk Foods

Submitted by Serena Mason on July 13, 2010

Fast food is main reason for obesity in developed countries. As people have acquired busy schedules, eating fast food is not their ideal food choice but more of a necessity. This is because most people do not have an adequate amount of time to cook a healthy meal.

The taste of fast food makes us compromise the nutrition required for our bodies. There are several fast food nutrition facts that you need to bear in mind when buying any packed fast food; avoid foods that have any mention of hydrogenation on it as these food have trans fats in them. Trans fats are mainly used in foods to increase their shelf life and taste.

They are not natural fats and hence our body finds it difficult to process them resulting in obesity. Refined sugar is also not good for your health. Most sweet dishes contain refined sugar which also leads to obesity.

Another reason why fast foods are popular is because they have a lot of salt and spices, however when preparing these foods, a lot of their nutritional content is lost.

Fast food health risks can be reduced to a great extent by just choosing healthy fast foods. It is important for you to be careful with what you eat, especially at a fast-food restaurant, There are a few measures you need to take:

  • Avoid any food products that is super size or large as your craving will be satisfied by a smaller portion but you will tend to finish the larger meal so as not to waste your food.

You could do the same thing when ordering a sandwich get the regular sandwich or the kid's meal.
  • Many fast-food restaurants have now started adding healthier sides instead if the greasy French fries. So go for the healthy side order instead.
  • Order a side salad with your meal.

You won’t fill up only on the unhealthy foods, and the salad will add fiber and vitamins to balance your unhealthy meal.
  • Control the amount of mayo you use in your sandwich, burger or even salad as just one tablespoon of regular mayonnaise has around 100 calories in it.
  • Avoid having fizzy, sugary, calorie rich drinks to your already unhealthy meal. Water is the best option here as a large glass of water with your meal will help you feel full faster. If you want to drink something other than water then you could have some unsweetened ice tea or squeeze a lemon in your water.
