The best gift that any parent can ever give their children is the habit of eating healthy. Kids do not need a nutritionist or special guidance as we elders do. They simply watch us and imitate us. Hence, it is important that as adults, we need to eat healthy and lead a healthy life in order to cultivate this habit in our children. Here are some tips that you can follow to help your children get this habit.
Eat In Moderation The first and foremost thing that you need to teach your child is to eat in moderation.
Junk food is supposed to be a treat and to be treated as luxury item. Teach them how to control their cravings and temptations.
Eat Slowly It may sometimes be a little difficult to cultivate healthy eating habits in kids, especially when it comes to making them eat slowly.
Stuffing your mouth with food and eating hastily to finish the food and run out to play is not the right way to eat. Not only is it bad manners, but since the food is not chewed properly, it takes longer to digest. Hence, it is important that you teach your child the art of eating slowly by chewing each morsel properly before swallowing it. Our stomach needs exactly twenty minutes to send a message to our brain that it is full.
This is another reason why we need to teach our children to eat slowly so that they don’t end up overeating. Make sure that dinners are family affairs where everyone sits down to eat.
Avoid eating out Try to make meals at home tasty and fun so that family visits to restaurants are reduced. Not only will you be able to save money, you will also be able to ensure that your children get to eat healthy meals. If you do plan on eating out, try to steer your child towards healthier food choices, instead of the nearest fast food joint.
Make sure that your child eats healthy food options. For example, instead of giving your child a soft drink or a carbonated drink, substitute it with fresh juice.
Never Skip Breakfast Make it a ground rule that your child does not step out of the house without eating his/her breakfast. Breakfast is the most important meal of the day and should be eaten without fail. This helps your child get the required energy for the day and makes sure that he/she is full of energy throughout the day.
Seek Examples from Role Models Children love to imitate super heroes and the role models whom they adore. If your child refuses to eat, you can use the example of any super hero or role model that he/she likes. For example, if your child loves Popeye, you can say Popeye eats spinach and so he is strong. You will be surprised to see that your child immediately listens to you.
