Fast Food Slowers Health

Submitted by Loring A. Windblad on July 8, 2010

Fast food is very popular today among people who work and don’t have the luxury of time to cook a meal. Fast food is food that can be prepared and served very quickly and is normally sold at fast food joints and restaurants. The ingredients used in fast food are preheated and precooked. But having fast food isn’t advisable, due to its nutritional content. By eating burgers and fries, the body consumes more than double the calories that one might have had if they ate wholegrain pasta or salad.

Our body has been designed to consume low energy dense foods, and since fast foods are high in energy, it is a major contributor to obesity. Two of the most common health effects of fast food are heart attacks and cardiovascular disease. This is because the regular consumption of fast food causes clogging within the arteries.

There are two types of dangers that come along with a high consumption of fast food:  The obvious ones and the hidden dangers of fast food. The oil used in making fast food is hydrogenated oil which increases the shelf life of the food; however this is very dangerous for human consumption as it has high levels of Tran’s fats.

These fats are stored in the fat cells or clog the arteries. One of the other significant dangers of fast food is the unhealthy compounds that are produced during preparation. These compounds are produced when the unstable fatty acids in the oil breaks down with the high temperatures.

Keep in mind that fast food and nutrition plans do not go hand in hand and that it is important to eliminate these foods from your regular diet.
These are some tips for healthy eating at fast food restaurants:

  • It is important to make wise menu selections; avoid any dishes that are deep-fried, pan-fried, creamy, and crispy, and instead choose dishes with more vegetables.
  • You must drink a sufficient amount of water on a daily basis. Instead of having a soda or any fizzy drink that is loaded with calories, have fresh fruit juices or an unsweetened iced-tea or just a glass of water.
  • It is better to avoid creamy salad dressing. Although salads are a wise choice and have a low calorific value, heavy creamy salad dressing can have a very high calorie content.

Any type of salad dressing is packed with calories.
  • Always order smaller portions; even an average fast food meal contains 1000 calories or more. Instead of fried food order a salad on the side.
  • Buffets are the biggest culprits. Avoid any buffets even if it means avoiding a salad bar, as people tend to overeat at buffets.
  • Always eat slowly; you must savor each bite, chew your food more and avoid eating in a hurry. Stop eating even before you are full as it takes your body a while to register that you have eaten.  This will also aid digestion.
