Foods to Prevent Spring Asthma

What is asthma? Asthma is a common respiratory disease.  It is a chronic inflammation of the lungs that causes the narrowing of airways, making it difficult for you to breathe. Many factors cause asthma, including few foods that might trigger an allergy. Keeping a check on what you eat and drink is the best way to treat asthma.

A proper planned diet might help you prevent asthma attacks. Since different people have an allergy to different foods, there is no standard diet that can be recommended.


Simple ways to control and prevent asthma attacks is to avoid foods that trigger them. It is important for asthmatics to consume a healthy diet and maintain a lifestyle so that their immune system becomes resilient to the things that trigger asthma. Foods that are recommended for asthmatics widen their airways and help them breathe better.



Given below are a few pointers for preventing asthma attacks as well as some foods for asthma that you should include in your diet.

  • Avoid foods that cause phlegm. Dairy products such as yogurt, milk, cheese, and ice cream can result in increased phlegm, leading to coughing, sneezing, and colds.
  • Eat plenty of vegetables.
  • Take foods rich in omega-3 fatty acids and vitamin B.


    Fish, especially salmon, tuna, halibut, and cod,are rich sources of omega-3 and vitamin B.
  • Include fruits rich in Vitamin C in your diet. It acts as an anti-inflammatory agent and helps improve lung function. Fruits rich in Vitamin C include apples, apricots, grapes, mango, kiwi, oranges, and papaya.
  • Include essential minerals in your diet that help sooth your airways such as magnesium.


    Whole grains, beans, nuts, and seeds are rich in magnesium. Magnesium is the best supplement to naturally cure asthma.
  • Drink a cup of green tea everyday. While it does not cure asthma, it helps reduce the frequency of asthma attacks.
  • Avoid beverages that contain caffeine such as coffee, strong tea, and alcoholic beverages.
  • Vitamins for Asthma: Berries are rich in many nutrients and are known to control the symptoms of asthma. Blueberries are rich in vitamins E and C, strawberries are rich in vitamin C, blackberries are a good source of vitamin B, and raspberries and gooseberries are rich in vitamins A and B.
  • Avoid fermented foods containing yeast such as bread, cakes, and pastries. Fermented foods are known to trigger asthma.
  • Include plenty of fluids in your diet to improve digestion. Avoid eating foods that are hard to digest.
The best way to treat asthma is to identify the triggers and limit or eliminate exposure to them. If symptoms persist, consult a medical practitioner.
