Junk Food Facts

Submitted by Stella Morgan on June 18, 2010

Most people these days love to eat junk food. In the last few decades, these foods have become available all across the world, in restaurants, movie halls, and fast food chains. The advertisements for fast foods are attractive, enticing people to buy and eat more of it. The junk food diet is a daily diet that consists mainly of junk food and this type of a diet has become commonplace.  But one must remember that obesity and junk food is not really healthy, especially on a daily basis.

Junk food facts:

  • Why are these foods known as ‘junk foods’? The reason behind this is that these food products are low in nutritional value.

Again, you need to really analyze each food product to see if it is low in nutritional value or not. For instance, pizza is considered low in nutritional value by some, and thus, termed as a junk food item. But if you order or cook a pizza with lots of vegetables, lean meats, low-fat cheese and tomatoes cooked with olive oil and use a whole-wheat pizza base, then it can actually be a healthy meal.
  • Another of junk food nutritional facts is that junk food products have a low satiation value.

When people eat junk food, they do not feel full quickly and this leads to overeating. This is because most junk foods are rich in carbohydrates but low in fiber. The human body cannot digest fiber and so it helps to form roughage which keeps you feeling full for a longer period of time.
  • Junk food also replaces healthy food products.

If someone munches on a burger and fries, then he would not be eating all those vegetables, legumes and fruits that he should be having.
  • You have to be careful while choosing your foods. Even the most routine foods might turn out to be junk foods.

When you choose cereals, make sure that you choose the healthier version because there are some kinds of cereals that are high in sugar and fructose, milled corn, corn syrup and white flour.
  • Snacks can also have lots of calories and come under the category of junk foods. For instance, cookies and cakes, chips and wafers are junk foods that are actually low in nutritional value.
  • There is a proven connection between junk food and overeating. With more junk food options now available, obesity is fast reaching epidemic proportions.
  • Research has shown that fast foods are low in fiber, fat, and liquid sugars. They taste very good, which makes people gorge on them. Even small quantities of junk foods are generally packed with calories.
Tips:
  • You don’t have to stop eating junk foods totally. What we are suggesting is that you eat these foods moderately. Limit these to twice a month or less.
  • If you are eating out, you can choose from healthier options. Choose a whole-wheat pizza with vegetable topping, a bean burrito, a whole grain sandwich, or a roll with grilled chicken as these foods would have superior nutritive value.
