Health and Well-being: The Smartest Investment For Life

Submitted by Loring A. Windblad on June 1, 2010

Today’s existence is one that is a far cry from our early beginnings of being farmers or hunter gatherers. This transition is something that has happened in the space of a few centuries and therefore the human body has not had time to adapt to this change. What this means is that our bodies that were used to a specific level of activity every day, now has to contend with our sitting in one place for almost 8 hours or more. With this change has also come the lack of any kind of physical exercise and as far as physiology goes, all we do is sit, eat, and sleep. This is an uncomfortable truth that we must all accept.

Worse still, alcohol consumption, smoking, and drug use is increasing all the time. All of this takes a toll on the body and we just end up reducing our life spans considerably.

Investing in your well-being starts with restoring the balance in life.

The first step towards this ideal is to get more exercise and activity. The male and female bodies are use to quite an amount of physical labor and therefore we must ensure that we get at least one hour of cardiovascular exercise each day. When this level of exercise starts to become comfortable, more strenuous exercise and weight training must be done to get proper muscle tone.

Diet plays a very significant part in our lives. Considering that in the space of a century, we have reduced the amount of work that we humans do, we have also increased the size of the meals and amount we consume more. Worse than this is the fact that we eat more fatty foods and this is reflected in the fact that we suffer more heart disease and obesity complications.

To start with, reduce the amount of oil and fat in the diet. To add to this, remove red meat completely from the diet and shift to baking instead of frying as a cooking method. The following step from this change is to start eating more vegetables – the more exotic the better. Plants contain all the nutrients that we will ever need in our bodies and it is sometimes a wonder why we as humans moved to a meat based diet. Psychologically, it is important that we feel content about our existence and that we do not stress ourselves out unnecessarily.
