Diet Tips For Diabetes Relief

Diabetes refers to a condition in which the level of blood sugar rises abnormally. This happens because the enzyme responsible for processing the carbohydrates, proteins and fats present in food is unable to perform its function properly, either because it is produced in insufficient amounts or because the body fails to use the enzyme produced by the pancreas fully.

The former kind of diabetes is called Type-1 diabetes, while the latter kind is called Type-2 diabetes. Sometimes, pregnant women may also suffer from an abnormal increase in the blood sugar level, which decreases to the normal level once the baby is born. This kind of diabetes is known as gestational diabetes.

There are various factors that predispose a person to diabetes: excessive consumption of starchy and sweet foods, lack of physical exercise, obesity, improper functioning of the pancreas, stress and anxiety, and heredity.

A few basic dietary rules must be followed to prevent and control diabetes. Eat low-fat, low-starch food and restrict the consumption of artificially sweetened foodstuff.

Thus, rice, tubers, red meat, deep-fried snacks, junk food and confectionery should be avoided. Packaged, ready-to-eat foods, breads made of refined flour and junk food should also be avoided.

It is also recommended that you quit smoking and drinking.

You should eat plenty of fresh fruits and raw vegetables as they supply essential nutrients to the body without adding significantly to the amount of calories that you intake.

However, eat excessively sweet fruits like ripe bananas and mangoes only in moderate amounts. Green, leafy vegetables like spinach and juicy fruits like cucumber are especially in regulating blood sugar level.

It is also popularly known that eating raw garlic, ginger and onion on a regular basis helps control the level of blood sugar. You may use these to garnish salads if you find their taste too strong. In addition to these rules, follow a few natural remedies at home to lower blood sugar level. The juice of raw bitter gourd is one of the most effective means of controlling blood sugar.

You may also add a teaspoon of the juice of Indian gooseberry to a small cup of bitter gourd juice and drink this solution every morning for better results. For another remedy, soak a handful of black raisins in a cup of water overnight, collect the water the next morning through a strainer and drink it on an empty stomach every day for a couple of months.
