Almost all women experience some amount of discomfort during their menstrual periods, but in some cases the person suffers from acute pain that disrupts normal everyday activities. This condition is medically referred to as dysmenorrhea. The most common symptoms of this condition are severe cramps in the lower abdomen, pain in the pelvic area and the back, extreme nausea and vomiting, and exhaustion.

It is believed that the increased activity of the hormone prostaglandin, which is produced inside the uterus, is responsible for this problem. Stress and anxiety, obesity, lack of physical exercise, and excessive smoking or drinking are factors that may aggravate the problem.

It is advised that if you suffer from excessively painful periods, you should eat a diet rich in carbohydrates but low in salt and sugar content.


Thus, whole grains, cereals, sprouts, pulses and nuts should be eaten regularly, while artificially flavored snacks, pickles and other spicy foods should be avoided. You should also eat plenty of fresh fruits and raw vegetables, as they supply essential nutrients to the body and prevent dehydration and exhaustion during the period. Green leafy vegetables like spinach, cabbage, broccoli and lettuce are especially recommended as they are rich natural sources of iron, a nutrient essential for preventing anemia caused by very heavy periods.


Your doctor may also recommend the regular intake of vitamin and iron supplements to enable the body bear the strain of menstrual periods. If you are overweight, you should also consult a dietician and eat the right kind of food to lose excess body weight.

This helps lessen the pain experienced during periods.


As a rule, stay away from alcohol and cigarettes, and restrict the consumption of caffeinated foods and beverages. In addition to these basic rules, a few simple home remedies may also help reduce menstrual pain.

You should consume half a teaspoon of cinnamon powder mixed in a glass of milk every day during the period to get relief from cramps.


Another popular remedy for menstrual pain is to boil a few small pieces of raw ginger in a glass of water till it is reduced to half its volume, add a pinch of sugar or jiggery to the decoction and drink small portions of this solution thrice a day. For another remedy, cook raw banana leaf in a small amount of oil and curd for some time and eat the leaf when it gets soft. This prevents excessive bleeding and reduces back pain.
