Treating Menstruation Cramps At Home

Technically known as dysmennorhea, menstrual cramps affect a lot of women in their childbearing years. The changes in the level of hormones during the menstrual cycle cause the uterus to contract just before and during periods due to which women experience mild to severe pain their lower abdomen and the pelvic region. In some cases, the pain may be so acute that normal day-to-day activities are disrupted, while in others the person is able to manage with very little discomfort. In extreme cases, throbbing pain in the abdomen and the back may last for a couple of days. It has been observed that the intensity of the pain decreases as one gets older, and often the problem becomes much less painful after pregnancy and childbirth.

You should take care that you consume sufficient amounts of vitamins and minerals through your diet.

Consume plenty of fresh fruits, raw vegetables, nuts, cereals and whole grains on a regular basis. This goes a long way in decreasing the intensity of menstrual cramps. You should especially include tofu, beans, dairy products and sea fish in your diet to supply minerals to your body.

You may also consume vitamin and mineral supplements after consulting your physician. It is also recommended that you restrict the consumption of caffeine based products and abstain from alcohol altogether if you suffer from severe menstrual cramps. It also helps to curb the consumption of table salt.

One of the most popular natural ways of easing the pain and sensation of heaviness in the abdomen during the menses is to drink a cup of lukewarm chamomile tea. You may use ready-to-use herbal tea packs for this purpose, or may steep two teaspoons of dried chamomile blossoms in a cup of water for 5 minutes, add to it a few drops of honey and consume this mixture thrice a day.

Alternatively, you may prepare some herbal tea by boiling a small amount of finely chopped ginger root in water for about 10 minutes and then collecting the clear liquid through a strainer.

Add a few drops of honey to this extract to sweeten it. Consume a small cup of this tea three times a day to get relief from menstrual cramps. Consuming a small cup of the juice of parsley leaves every morning is also known to make menstruation less painful. You may also mix this with some beet root juice in order to make the remedy more effective.
