Bad Breath Remedies And Cures

Scientifically called halitosis, bad breath is one of the most common and embarrassing dental problems. Halitosis is caused by the accumulation of bacteria in the mouth. These bacteria produce sulfur gas, which is a foul smelling gas and is the prime cause of bad breath.

What causes bad breath? The major causes of bad breath are:
  • First and foremost, lack of oral hygiene is the prime cause of bad breath.
  • The intake of alcohol, cigarette smoke or tobacco also causes bad breath
  • The consumption of pungent smelling foods like onion and garlic also causes bad breath.
  • The intake of certain non vegetarian foods like fish and meat and dairy products also cause halitosis.
  • Home remedies for bad breath. Bad breath is not just a physical problem, but it is a social stigma as well.


    As such, it is important to take measures to control bad breath. There are several home remedies that may be deployed to cure bad breath, some of which are:
  • First of all, you must ensure good oral hygiene. Brush your teeth after all meals or at least rinse mouth frequently to avoid the accumulation of bacteria in the mouth. 
  • You can use fenugreek seeds to relieve bad breath.


    Prepare fenugreek tea and consume it at least three times a day to cure halitosis.
  • Chew the tender leaves of guava or on an unripe guava fruit to cure bad breath. Guava is a rich source of tannic, oxalic and phosphorus acids and relieves bad breath and other ailments of the teeth and gums.
  • You can take a parsley infusion to cure bad breath. Soak some parsley in water for 12 hours, strain the liquid, and then consume it to relieve bad breath.
  • You can also use the infusion of avocado to relieve bad breath.
  • Avoid consuming alcohol and refined carbohydrates like sugar.
  • Drink a lot of fruit juices and soups to relieve bad breath.


  • Restrict your intake of foods like onion and garlic.
  • You must resort to a balanced diet which includes lots of nuts, seeds, fruits and vegetables to combat bad breath.
  • You are also advised to cut down on the consumption of non vegetarian foods and dairy products.
  • Drink lots of water. Water helps to get wash away food residues and this reduces the bacteria that cause bad breath.
  • Chewing on a sugar free gum after meals is also a good way of combating bad breath.
