Food For Two During Pregnancy

Pregnancy is that time during a woman’s life when she actually ends up eating more than she could ever dream of. This is quite obviously because this is when she has to eat for two individuals – herself and her growing baby. During pregnancy, the diet is extremely important and should be one where indulgences are allowed but within the restrictions of what is considered healthy food.

Note that what is considered healthy food during pregnancy is slightly different from the popular conception of health food during a weight reduction exercise. A woman would even have some odd cravings during pregnancy but this is something that can be allowed as long as it falls within the allowed list of eatables.

Pregnancy can be considered adulthood plus a childhood and this is reflected in the nutritional requirements of the time.

All the major food groups have to be taken, which includes protein, fat, carbohydrates, and vitamins. One of the worries during pregnancy is the effect that some types of food may have during the first trimester. The first trimester is the time when nearly everything that can go wrong with a pregnancy stares one in the face.

This is the stage when most miscarriages happen and are sometimes avoidable.

This is because there could be some types of foods that disrupt the regular secretion and action of hormones causing the body to suddenly resume the menstrual cycle. Essentially any pregnant mother should ensure that she gets the following nutrients in here system: all the B vitamins from dairy, vitamin C from fruits, vitamin D from spending some time in the sun, calcium, iron, magnesium, zinc, copper, and iodine – from the dietary intake of leafy green vegetables. This is in addition to the intake protein and carbohydrates.

There are some items in a regular diet that need to be avoided during pregnancy. These are some spices like mustard, clove, garlic, and the papaya fruit that are known to cause miscarriages even in some quantities. Other items that must also be avoided are trans-fats and heavy meat diets. This is because of the high presence of cholesterol in the diet.

It is also important that after pregnancy a certain diet is followed to allow for the loss of nutrients from the process of labor. The biggest loss for most women is in iron, which is because of blood loss from the body. This is best supplemented by supplements. It is important to consult a doctor before taking any supplements.
