Living With Gerd

GERD is the short form given to a widely prevalent disorder known as Gastro esophageal reflux disease. This is the disease which leads to that gripping and unpleasant sensation known as acid reflux or simply, heartburn. The malfunctioning of one’s lower esophageal sphincter (LES) is what effectively causes this disease. The malfunction is such that stomach contents literally back up in a manner that they reach one’s esophagus.
It is from this action that GERD gets its name.
There appear to be different factors involved that lead to this disease including, possibly, hiatal hernia. Living with GERD doesn’t have to be highly unpleasant or defeating. What’s necessary is simple but effective lifestyle choices which can go a long way in helping you cope with Gastro esophageal reflux disease.
Let’s start with meals – the size does matter.
If you are the kind of person who prefers large meals, it could be hard on your digestive system. This is one of the innocuous habits that might result in acid reflux. Do yourself a favor and make a conscious decision to opt for smaller meals.
You can eat, say, five meals and ensure that these are well spaced over the day. In fact, this is one simple step that might actually work when it comes to dealing with those hunger pangs. We usually eat a lot more than is necessary, without even realizing it.
With these more frequent mini meals, it means that you know that your next meal is coming up soon. Your digestive system isn’t overloaded and your brain doesn’t need to feel hunger pangs because of the increased frequency of meals. Don’t underestimate the power of drinking plenty of that miracle drink – water. Along with this, fiber becomes very necessary. Whether it is breakfast cereal or those pulses at lunch, make sure your sources of fiber remain healthy sources.
Sugary, highly artificial sources of fiber do not count. Bear in mind that alcoholic beverages can only make your GERD worse. Since obesity is a major factor when it comes to GERD, weight should also be a focus point. Bringing your weight down to more acceptable levels, when dealing with Gastro esophageal reflux disease, is not a choice. Every person can benefit from proportional reduction of flab and weight. It’s these little changes in one’s daily routine and lifestyle in general that make a difference when it comes to Gastro esophageal reflux disease.
