Egg Allergy |
Egg Allergy - What To Do About Allergy Caused Due To Eggs?An allergy is immune system disorder. As such, when an antigen or foreign particle enters your body, your immune system is not able to form antibodies. Rather, these particles are then termed as allergens which show specific reactions. Allergens can be pollen, dust particles, and certain foods. Different individuals are affected by different allergens depending upon the state of their immune system.
Common allergic reactions include asthma, eczema, fever, hay fever, and food allergies.
Some individuals are allergic to eggs, i.e. eggs act as antigens or allergens. Eggs are one of the most common allergens that generally affect children. Eggs are rich in proteins and egg white as well as yolk may cause egg allergy.
The symptoms of egg allergy include eczema, hives (these are elevated patches on the surface of skin), redness, and swelling. In rare cases, an egg allergy may cause anaphylactic shock (which is a dilation of the blood vessels, causing swelling in the body).
Eggs are a rich source of proteins and egg allergy is caused by one or more of these proteins. The proteins found in egg white are ovomucoid, ovalbumin, ovotransferrin, and lysozyme.
The proteins found in the yolk are livetin, apovitillin, and vosvetin. These proteins are specifically found in eggs and not poultry and as such, the consumption of poultry may not trigger the specific antigen-antibody reaction, characteristic of an egg allergy. If the allergy is caused by a yolk protein called livetin, the resultant allergy would be from eggs as poultry as this protein named livetin is found in both these foods.
Treat Symptoms Of Egg AllergyThe best way to avert the symptoms of egg allergy is to avoid eggs and foods that contain eggs.
You may avoid direct consumption of eggs, but it is difficult to avoid indirect consumption of eggs, i.e., egg present as a constituent in other foods. As such, you must be cautious and read the food labels in order to avoid the intake of eggs and here lies the utility of nutritional facts on the labels of packaged foods.
Avoiding egg and egg containing foods is the primary and most effective way to reduce the symptoms of an egg allergy. If you suffer from a moderate to severe allergic reactions, you are advised to consult a medical practitioner for expert advice. Doctors may recommend desensitization therapy, wherein the allergic patient is advised to increase the consumption of the allergen (in this case egg) gradually to raise the immunity of body against the proteins that act as allergens for the body. |
